Elika's outward presence has been cultured greatly by her father by age ten, which many may perceive her to be stoic and uncaring. A visage schooled into military regulation of a stern and fearless individual. When the reality of the matter reveals she has strong inner desires for friendship and camaraderie; something that she lacked within the latter years of her early teenage life.
Coupled with social separation, Elika has difficulty making and keeping friends due to her negligence, however unaware she may be of this matter. In recent years, she's taken refuge in the comfort of literature, though her catalogues may include extensive writings on military tactics and strategies.
After her acceptance into the military and joining with the Military Police, Elika has since grown to becoming more outspoken about her opinions with the help of her training and support from new friendly faces. However, if she begins to grow tired of the conversation or feels threatened, she will not hesitate to offer a rather icy shoulder.
Born and raised into a family of military lineage within Trost District of Wall Rose, they did not possess much in the ways of wealth or comfort, but they kept a family tradition of pride for oneself and humanity as a whole. Elika was cared for and tended by her grandparents on her father’s side for the first six years of her life. While her parents were away on-duty as part of the Reconnaissance division. Due to their long expeditions and dedication to bettering the world for their daughter, Elika doesn’t remember too much about her times when her mother and father received leave to spend time with her.
On that sixth year of her life, her grandparents had received word that her parents’ squad had a terrible encounter against a titan, and her mother had passed away during the skirmish. Her father returned home days later after receiving discharge for his honorable service, despite sacrificing his arm, his leg, and the woman he loved for the greater good of mankind. Elika’s grandparents could sense it in his spirit, but her father had since then grown bitter and hateful against the Titans. Unknowingly, this would eventually spark a desire in her father to help make Elika strong enough to defend not only herself, but avenge her mother.
Still within her youth, Elika had not come to realize to what extent her father's bitter hate and dwelling were converted into rigourous training and exercises for the young girl by age ten. After her grandparents had left when her father regained his strength to operate without assistance, Elika's lifestyle grew more harsh and authoritative. Many kids she used to play with in her early years began to distance themselves from her. Not only because of her father’s intimidating presence, but also due to her own way of thinking also altered to close herself off from others.
By the time she had reached her teenage years of fifteen, news was received that the Titans, which many remained negligent toward, had breached Wall Maria. The information struck her father heavy after years of regret and mourning over his departed wife, and what would become of the rest of their family and humanity as a whole. However, without hesitation, Elika had decided that she would enlist in the military early and drive back the threat of the Titans.
When questioned for her purpose joining the military, Elika has been conditioned to provide the response for "offer my life to the better of mankind". However, shortly after enlisting and being received at the training grounds, she quickly learned that she personally had no real reason of her own.
Being enlisted in the military and battling against Titans does not leave much in the cards for romantic relations by Elika's standards. It may be possible to catch this dedicated woman's attention, but highly unlikely that she will prioritize one person over her duties as a soldier. Though another interesting fact to note would be her bisexuality, which stems from her separation from both genders. It is possible for both a man or a woman to peak her interests, but again, the most layman's term to consider Elika at present would be a "kuudere".
Father, Sender Harel, once a young and passionate man enlisted in the Reconnaissance group to defend humanity and bring about a greater future for his family. Widower to a fellow Reconnaissance member, Ezra Harel, who fell victim to a Titan attack during one of their expeditions beyond the walls. Sender lost his left arm and right leg attempting to free Ezra. Distraught over the events and his later honorable discharge from service, Sender quickly acquired alcohol to ease his grieving, and soon began teaching Elika military regimens when she turned age ten. Now speckles of grey hair express his years of distress and his undying hatred of the Titans.
Mother, Ezra Harel, was considered to be a young and beautiful woman enlisted in the Reconnaissance division. Soon after her marriage to Sender and bearing their only daughter, Elika, Ezra was filled with a new sense of passion to rejoin her squad so as to cut a path to a brighter future for her daughter. However, during one of their expeditions, Ezra and Sender's squad was unfortunate to encounter more Titans than intelligence previously provided. During their attempt at retreat, Ezra was ambushed and ultimately claimed by the Titans, leaving Sender to witness her fate first-hand and fill her husband with grief for years to come.
Elika's Grandparents, Herschel and Yonina Harel, and parents to her father, Sender Harel. Having raised Elika one year after she was born; while her parents were on-duty during their expeditions as members of the Reconnaissance group. Kind and gentle folk who take strong value in the simpler things in life, they have developed a bond with age that never sees them argue with themselves or their family. Heartbroken at the news of Ezra's passing, and there for their son when he attempted to adapt to the loss of his limbs, they tended to Elika until the age of ten before returning back to their own home. It has been five years now since Elika has seen her grandparents, but she has a strong belief that they are doing just fine.
Childhood friend, Viola Basque, by the age of six, Elika's grandparents had brought her to visit some of their friends. During the regaling of adults through talk and gossip, Elika ventured out onto the streets to find something that would hold her interest. Further down the path, she had come across another young girl with blonde hair traveling with her parents. Although their time together was brief, the two quickly formed a friendship and a promise to come visit more often. As a memento of their time together, each girl exchanged a gift to remember each other by. However, the friendship only lasted the one day, and that was ten years ago. Even despite enlisting within the same squadron, both girls have little memory of that time, but something feels strangely familiar when the two interact.
Combat: Elika's father had conditioned her to be fearless at the sight of a large beast, oftentimes dressing up in a mask to surprise her at a young age. Much of Elika's experience comes from practicing alone or against her father. And when not occupying herself through study, she would be seen honing her muscles and skill, but she has yet to experience the real dangers of battling a real titan.
Defence: Elika's father had a belief that the Titans would not allow a person to defend themselves. Many Titans would appear and even Deviant types would attack relentlessly. While Elika is capable to take a hard-hitting blow, she cannot take too many and will likely drain most of her strength into flight and attack patterns.
Strategy: When she wasn't spending the past six years of her life training or honing her combat skills with her father. Elika had been given assignments and tasks to research on military tactics that are in use through all three branches of the military. While she may occasionally mix up her studies with a little light novel reading, she enjoys to take half an hour out of each day to brush up on her knowledge.
Teamwork: After separating herself from friends she once knew, Elika spent over six years training with learning from her father in solitude. This bore a significant impact on her ability to communicate to others that were not in superior ranks. Much like her inability to make friends, Elika has difficulty coordinating unless it was by someone else's command. This explains why she respects those with sufficient abilities to coordinate and lead the squad, but she will question commands if the strategy appears asinine.
Agility: This is the only other ability where Elika excels greatly. Due to her smaller frame and lean physique, Elika has become surprisingly flexible and capable of dodging attacks with her extreme speed. When things are down on the wire, Elika may easily evade and use quick thinking to manage a situation to her advantage. She uses this limber agility and fast acting to avoid being hurt, since Elika's resilience is not as amazing as her speed.
Despite her father being an alcoholic, Elika has not once been physically or verbally abused during these episodes, as her father tends to drink late nights and in private.
Even after the loss of her mother, Elika does not openly express distress at her mother's memory, even at an early age; Perhaps suggesting there are harboured emotions.
While she will not deny also having dreams, Elika will not allow herself to be a committed daydreamer, and focuses more on the task at hand and preparations for the future.
Unlike many admitted wishes to go beyond the walls by other cadets, Elika has no desire to see what's beyond the walls, and will likely look down on those who fill their heads with ideals that does not help the present situation.
Elika has no nicknames. Try to call her "Elly/Ellie" and she'll snap your fingers back.
Elika has actually fought large monsters before, as her character design comes from a character persona made in Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate.
In Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, Elika originally had pink hair, but due to the lack of hair dyes in Shingeki no Kyojin the colour was changed to black because of her Islamic origins.
The name Elika actually derives from Hebrew descent, meaning "God will develop"; Her name alone has been the basis for her Islamic ethnicity and hair colour.
